Sub-$500 Offset
My girlfriend plays acoustic and wants to move to electric. Offsets have captured her fancy, so I am interested in picking up an offset for her for under $500. I am comfortable wiring and soldering, so if it is cheap but needs new pickups out of the box, that's cool. I am cool with changing saddles, too. It does not have to have a tremolo. Her preference is Daphne Blue or Surf Green, but basically nothing natural or burst. What is out there?

All the Squier VM offsets (Jazzmaster/Jaguar/Mustang/Bass VI) can be gotten for under $500. Also the Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster, which I love. Squier has really upped its quality game, so these are actual decent guitars. Totally recommended.

IMO it'd be better with p90 bridge and firebird neck.chuckjaywalk wrote:THAT is perfection!Twangasaurus wrote:DiVill B100

Yeah wish those pickups were reversed. Firebird neck is enchanting and p90 bridge is all the right kinds of raw.
I'm always looking at the squiers, but those others look pretty dang cool.

You might have her try a couple out to see what feels best.
A blue Mustang is just about the prettiest thing there is but the short scale might not work for her if she's used to acoustic.

Re: Sub-$500 Offset
I'd strongly consider one of the Squier Mustangs. PUs are solid, they work, and you can easily find one under $300 - $250ish if you cruise the MF "Scratch and dent" section.
Realistically coming from an acoustic background, she's not likely to want or deal with trem/etc wankery from the getgo and you can just pretend the bar doesn't exist, and the Mustang is easy enough to get stable and comes in a color close to what she wants (sonic blue).
Only weak spot really is the tuners, and they're in a 'feel cheap' category versus not functional. They're on par with the 70s ones on a couple Fenders I've had in that regard both in cheapness and "will actually stay in tune"

Re: Sub-$500 Offset
I recently picked up a new Eastwood Stormbird at a 30% closeout discount fro $300. It's a great set-neck offset for that kind of money, IMO. No pastels colors, though.

I'll second that the squires are really great. I've had my VM jaguar about a year now, without any mods. Thicker strings that the .9 are a must though. I will eventually get a mustang bridge and switch the nut though. I'm thinking about getting a VM mustang in blue as well....

That's what I have. Mine is the Fiesta Red H/H Jag. I've modded all the electronics except the stacked pots.Brandsmannen wrote:I'll second that the squires are really great.
