Too much noise on my bass!!
Every time I use ANY sort of dirt with my bass (especially the Boss SD-1) that isn't totally gated I get horrible feedback between every little pause. Guessing I need some sort of noise gate or compressor/limiter. Don't want to spend very much money at ALL. So what do you guys suggest?

Do you get a lot of hum when playing clean?
could be as simple as shielding..
I have found that where I put my pedals in relation to the amp makes a difference in noise level.
and I have a couple that are pure noise when run on a 1 spot, but not on a Boss power supply.
Yeah I know no help at all.

You could also have a microphonic pick up....is the feedback like a guitar too close to a overdriven amp(good) or is it more like pointing a mic straight into a pa monitor?

Try to isolate the noisy pedal(s)?
Remove everything from your chain and plug em in one at a time, and then one at a time and see which ones are the bad seeds.
If using a onespot try a cleaner power source (boss, pp2 if ya have, even batteries)
As far as noise gates go, I wouldn't go cheap on one. They are notorious for sucking the life out of your tone so throw down for a nice one.
