noob tube question

Post by fuzzywolf »

I'm replacing the tubes in an old amp. One tube however is a 6HU8/ELL80 tube. But I noticed that they aren't really produced anymore (well, at least not by the big companies/well known brands). Should I go with some rando tube website I find on google? Is there a sufficient substitution for this tube model? Should I worry about purchasing all the tubes from the same brand?

I thank you in advance for your vast knowledge, ilf

that depends on which rando tube website it is; however, most online tube websites are good

I'm not familiar with this tube so I can't say if there is a sufficient substitution; however, if you were to substitute something you'd likely need to mod the amp (to account for bias current)

you don't need to worry about purchasing all tubes from the same brand; however, if there is more than one of the same output tube, in other words, they are used in a push/pull configuration, you may need to match them

you're only replacing that one though right?

I figured I'd just go ahead and replace them all, unless such an approach is ill advised

no, that's good

sorry, I should have been more clear. I meant there is only one of that type of tube in the amp?
