line 6 mm4

Post by Faldoe »

I owned one years and ago and thought it was pretty good. Anyone still use one? Any benefit in getting it over an M5?

I had an M9 and thought the delays did not sound as good as the dl4. I can't recall the quality of the mod on the M9

It depends on who you wanna believe, there's different versions of the story floating around on the internet. But I think the official line 6 explanation is that the M series is based on the exact same algorithms that were used for their modelers. Only the M series includes some improvements (true bypass, volume fix,...).

As far as the M5 vs MM4 dilemma goes: Unless you're a huge fan of wacky modulation, I'd say the MM4 is overkill. Dispite the M5's small downsides, it's smaller and cheaper than an MM4, and it can do a shit ton of other effects as well. And it's got an onboard tuner as well, meaning you could kick your current pedal tuner off yer board to make room for moar fuzz :)

Well I can get an mm4 for $70. But having other options would be good. I just need some chorus and trem sounds.

I remember the m9 delays not sounding as good as the dl4 or I was inferring that all the algos in the M9 didn't sound as good as the 4 series pedals

Everyone's gonna have had different experiences but in my experience the M series are shittier build quality and prone to a much wider range of issues than the 4 series, generally if you replace the footswitches on a 4 series before it's been used a lot they're generally pretty reliable. The filters on the M5 are rubbish but the modulation effects seem to have no noticeable difference, i think any sound differences might be something to do with the buffering.
Anyway I would steer away from the M5 and get the MM4 so you have nice easy preset footswitches for all your mod effects, it's nice having all different types of effects and all but the thing is only able to sit in one place in the chain anyway so it screws with being able to stack things how you like.

If the build quality of the M series is even shittier than that of the 4 series, I'd just stay away from both...

Besides the slight volume drop, that was my one caveat with my DL4...Crappy switches and controls, and when it acts up for whatever reason (which isn't unlikely), it'll be close to impossible to have the pedal fixed.

I thought the modulations on the MM4 sounded better than the m5 same with the filters
I could never dial in the M5 to get the sames sounds I did on the MM4 and FM4 they were close but never quite had the same feel
plus the interface on the MM$ and FM4 just makes more sense to me than on the M5 I always struggled ot maintain presets in my M5
