Boris Heavy Rain bass tone

Post by Dark Barn »

I'm so in love with the sound of the bass on this song. Any conjecture on how to get there? it sounds like huge soft/almost clipping. Huge.

I'd say it's cleverly done clean/dirty blend? The growl reminds me of a Rat a bit with a lot of clean doing the massive bottom around it

KWB/Modded D+ can get in that ballpark. I don't hear a blend in there, really, but it's hard to tell from a youtube link.

Ooh KWB! Does anyone carry those, can you order direct from the dude? Any idea on cost? The name alone makes me all hot.

Skully modded my 250 into one (sort of. We did some things differently). Ben Adrian doesn't officially make them anymore, but he's posted the how to here (along with his permission/suggestion for people to build them):
http://www.electricalaudio.com/phpBB3/v ... =5&t=62873

I want to say the 250 + modding all together cost me a little over $100? Like $120, maybe? But, of course, Evan's not building right now and that was with an el-cheapo 250 and it was a couple of years ago so I might not be remembering correctly.

Your best bet is to check out some of the dudes who do custom work in the Shark Tank.

I don't know, man, maybe something like a crossover thing? because it feels to me as if the lowend was clean but the high mids and highs were distorted :idk:

it's a fantastic tone regardless of what it is

Listening to it again it just sounds like a detuned Ric into a pretty dark amp. You can really hear it around 2:30.

Makes sense to me. Live there is are two model t's (I assume one is for guitar and the other for bass) and an orange into a hiwatt cab (I assume for guitar) and a 6x10 or 12 or something orange cab. The orange cab and hiwatt cab were miked. There was a third cab that looks like a beatup 4x12. As I remember, he didn't use his pedals too much but I have seen his pedal board. There might be a crossover too thinking about the live setup (I have pictures from the stage) but it would be under really heavy compression after the microphones (all three cabs mic'd). I can post pics later if you want. Heading out the door right now for a minute.

Sounds about right -- at least that jives with all the times I've seen 'em live, but I assume they use rented backlines for the East Coast.

Pics are always welcome, because Boris is/was rad.

He does have a Rat on his pedalboard and that biamping/mic'ing is correct. He's also got this Japanese pedal that's kind a like a meat box, I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it too

yeah the Boot Leg Deep Box right? it's a low end + high-mid equalizer he uses but idk if its always on or on certain tracks or whatever. he's used a MASF starry wisdom which has a blend and also a Dwarfcraft ECT but i'm not really an expert with bass tones so i couldn't really guess much about which bits of gear would've been used on this track. could even be totally different from the live rig, i only saw his board on the Flood tour.
