Ampeg keeps squealing

Turned my Ampeg VT-22 (modded with MV) on today and when I turned the MV up to a certain point, it started this awful ringing feedback that persisted with strings muted and volume down on my guitar. No pedals on, amp was clean. Turned the MV down enough and it went away.

Is my amp dying?

Probably a bad tube. Lightly tap each tube with a chopstick or pencil eraser, while it's turned on at the lower volume. When you hear a loud noise, that tube is bad.
Otherwise, maybe a phase problem (who did the MV mod?) or perhaps a even dead cap.
I'd also engage and disengage the reverb (there is a lever or something on the back of those) and make sure everything is released/locked correctly

Is the other channel's volume knob up at all? Try rolling that down to 0 and see if it fixes it. I had this problem recently with mine and I think that somehow the channels cascade, but I'm not sure. Give it a try, though. It cured the problem for me. Mine has a MV, too.

Sounds like a microphonic preamp tube or some parasitic oscillation

Old ampegs don't float or burn, they just blow moar tubes!
