Pickups info

Post by sylnau »

I'm trying to compare the pickups of the Maton MS2000DLX to my old PRS CE-22.
Are the Maton pickups hotter? I'm confused because Maton specs (2 X).

MS2000DLX:

Bridge Pick Up:
MVB2 (Coil Tapped)
Magnets - Alnico 8 1000G
Coils - 2 x 8.5k

Neck Pick Up:
MHN2 (Coil Tapped)
Magnets - Alnico 5 950G
Coils - 2 x 8.5k

CE-22 (Dragon II):

Bass SPECS: • Covered • Magnet: Alnico • DC Res: 12k
Treble SPECS: • Covered • Magnet: Alnico • DC Res: 12k

I think what they are trying to say is that each humbucker is made up of two 8.5k coils.
So in full humbucker mode each pickup would be 17k and in split mode each pickup would be 8.5k.

MEC's right. Depends if it is wired in series or parallel. Series (standard) will be 17k.
Note that dc resistance is easy to measure, which is why it is so popular. It's not necessarily a good indicator of a pickup's output.

Does high output pickups sound great with a small 15 watt amp?
Or it will distort too much?

If those pickups really are 17k, that's pretty hot. :flame:

It might distort too much. Difficult to say. There're other factors involved (like your pedals and stuff).

If you can try out the guitar you're interested in with your set up, it might tell you what you need to know. :summon:

I can't try it. They are on order only here. :(
And I can't find anything I like in store here.

I'd say don't buy it.
Nothing in Montreal, Ottawa or Toronto?

Syl, try to find someone who has one and lives near you. Ask them if you can try it out.

DC measurement isn't definitive. Think about the old Bill Lawrence twin blades - those had huge dc output, but had could be dialed in as sweet, clear, jazzy, even hi-fi. Much more tame than the numbers would suggest.

There's too many variables at play to give a single answer. The magnets are going to play a factor here as well. The PRS specs you listed don't state a magnet type, I'd imagine A2 or A5. An A8 mag is going to at the very least FEEL more powerful, wider freq response etc. That, paired with possible variables on the amp - transformer size, headroom, speaker size and headroom - may lead to more distortion than the PRS pups, but due to the mags not the windings.

That store never ordered a Maton electric before and they are the only dealer in Canada.
Would be hard to find someone that has one.

Ottawa and Toronto are too far away from here (8 hours drive and more).
Montreal had a good store (Boutique Tone), but it's now closed forever.

I'd take it as a holiday man, go to Toronto and/or Ottawa, visit some music stores, go around town a bit and buy a guitar you like. ;) :)

I've tried some Duesenberg with my amp and they sounded great (49er, C.C., Starplayer TV).
Anybody know the specs of the Duesenberg Grand Vintage Humbucker?

I liked the Dusey, but It's not really what I'm looking for (price/value is a nonsense).

I would have to wait until summer... I have a friend living in Sudbury (in the north of Ontario).

Considering how critical you are and how unhappy you are with your current guitar I think the best advice I can give you is to do exactly that but that's just my 2 cents. ;) :)

You're all right. I shouldn't throw a big amount of money like that without trying it first. I might be deceived.
I guess I have to be patient and keep looking.

The tele is not bad, it's just not my thing. I can keep her for a while.

Thanks all!
