Russian Muffs

Post by WeHuntKings »

So I am gassing SO hard for a legit sovtek muff of the green variety. V7 if you will. I am kinda wanting to stay away from clones, but what are the ABSOLUTE BEST clones of these pedals out there? I want one mostly for bass, since I already have a V6 that slays for guitar work.

I've owned a legit Tall Font and the clone that got the closest was the W&C Tall Font.
I've heard good things about the ARC Big Green Pi too but I've never used one.

Supercollider, Hoof and Musket are all awesome in their own right but don't really nail the original toanz.

What I came to say. Skully reports it sounds exactly like his green russian, which ARC modeled it after.

FWIW I had a sovtek bubble font green russian for many many years. I was able to cop those tones on a side-by-side comparison with a BAT LSTR pedal (plus that has a mids knob and more volume on tap)... I ended up selling the russian for stupid money

I had a lstr for a while and I felt that it didn't have enough bass? Or maybe the mid control was too finicky. Having played an OG sovtek I feel like my rig responds better to the less mids variety.

I've got a black (!) bubble font. Sounds great, but honestly the current Bass Big Muff can get you 75% there for pennies (and it's not so bloody huge)!

Very true.

Even if they're higher gain, these platforms all clean up the signal a bit and get fairly articulate where the Sovteks can get foggy.
Musket gets close, but I would go with the Arc if you're after a true clone.
Special low-frequency version.

I actually think "on average" the clones being discussed here are generally better all around pedals than the EHX originals. More consistent pedal-to-pedal, higher degree of reliability because they use better design principals and parts, and are considerably more pedal board friendly. I think the ARC and the Wren and Cuff are both excellent pedals.

I feel that way about pretty much every "vintage" effect. As long as it's an actual clone, I'd much rather have the clone. "Mojo" is like homeopathy.

Yes! I want them fog toanz. I've noticed with all the demos I've watched of certain clones that they miss out on the smeary sounds.

I looked up the exact setting I sent to Mark when I compared the LSTR.... FUZZ at almost 3 o'clock, TONE all the way to the left, SCOOP at 9oclock, and VOLUME at like 2oclock. So yeah, I'm scooping the mids on it.

I've got a very early first run tall font that shares the same board as the cival war muffs....and my wren and cuff box of war sounds pretty damn close in many respects so I think wren and cuff have some pretty good ears, maybe look at their tall font clone.

I'd go Wren and Cuff for reliability unless you find a modded vintage example.
