Fuzz/OD for live settings
Hey guys,
Sorry if this was posted already or if there is entire encyclopedia thread on this. I couldn't find anything by searching, so hopefully it hasn't been brought up in a while.
I have a couple more muffy, bassy fuzzes that just aren't cutting through enough when I play with the band or in a live setting. I'm looking for some recommendations of one that can cut through the mix well without being to flat. I play in a shoegazey band so it doesn't have to be anything really brutal.
Again sorry if there is an entire thread already/

EQD Terminal. SS/BS Hawk. And have tried a Dream Crusher which so far has worked out alright but scoops too much I believe.D.o.S. wrote:What muffy bassy fuzzes?
I use a Fuck for my "clean" tone, just a touch of overdrive, and have a mini for the next step up. Just looking for that final fuzz for when things need to really get overblown.

Hmm. The terminal doesn't cut through for you?
Have you tried an unpleasant surprise?

Or hell, try the TAFM. Keep it in the family.

Thanks for the suggestions neonblack. I will check out the unpleasant surprise.
The terminal cuts through alright, but if I am not mic'd it gets soaked up by the mix.

You've already got a Fuck so you might as well go for the Axis of ILF and scour up Dr. Scientist's Elements at some point.
I thought that the Terminal was (very loosely) a member of the Superfuzz family?
There is/was neonblack's superwicked cheap Mutantes in the B/S/T -- in addition to the fact that its one of the best fuzz circuits ever, it definitely doesn't get lost in the mix. Definitely a taste-specific pedal, though.

Yeah I think you are right about the Superfuzz family and the terminal.
I'm going to take another look at the Elements too.

I do the exact same thing. For the final fuzz up I have tried Fuzz War, Super Unpleasant Companion (similar to the Terminal I guess), Harmonic Percolator, Hoof and Tafm. Think Tafm worked out the best for me.RoyalPalmer wrote:EQD Terminal. SS/BS Hawk. Sweet. I think one thing is I play a tele and the other guitarist plays a strat. So his fuzz tones are a little more honed in than mine so I need something that works with that. Elements has always intrigued me but I always wanted to avoid it for whatever reason. Looks/sounds like the most sculpt-able so I may give it a shot.

Have you tried putting an EQ pedal after your dirt? Worked great for me.

Re: Fuzz/OD for live settings
Try a TAFM, you can play with the clean blend running your already present enough dirt, and dial in fuzz to taste. That pedal pulls of three different types of fuzz/dirt sounds when you play with the two volumes, gain knob, and signal booster knob. It's pretty wild, I'm sure you know this already.
I didn't care for the elements when I had one. Too digital/modern sounding every time I plugged it in. Could have just been me, who knows, everyone loves theirs.
Another pedal I use to help me cut through the mix is the Stone Deaf PDF-1. Has a clean and a fuzz channel, the ability to boost a wide range of frequencies up to 20dB, and widen (or thin out) the bandwidth of said frequencies.
