Recommend me your best noisy & glitchy electronica/trip hop

Post by More_Divebombs »

I've been digging Jesu's Pale Sketches LP, as well as that Team Sleep record that Moreno and Zach Hill were involved in. I don't really know much else of this sort of thing. I quite like some of the older trip hop stuff, like Massive Attack, or DJ Shadow, though not all that glitchy.

It doesn't have to be exactly like the stuff above. Just whatever falls under glitchy/ambient/electronica/whatever.

I really dig that track from White Pony, Teenager

This is also a good track, though admittedly I don't know much NIN

Otherwise, I don't have a clue with this sort of stuff. I only listen to sludge and Fugazi. Show me what you got.

Prefuse 73 comes to mind first:

You might dig early Flying Lotus, too, (I haven't kept up with him so I can only recommend Reset and Los Angeles):

Not trip-hop but I have a giant boner for Hz records: http://www.hz-records.com/releases/
Most of their stuff is free. For starters I might go with these two: http://www.hz-records.com/releases/hz-005/ and http://www.hz-records.com/releases/hz-010/
Another favorite: http://oval.bandcamp.com/album/so (also check out the Oval album 94 diskont)

Somewhere in a Bermuda triangle of glitch, sludge, ambient, and fugazi:

- Efrim's solo LP. Drone, ambience, skewed singer/songwriter stuff. Not a perfect record, but I wish I could make something that a) good and b) equally disparate and cohesive.
- Hisstracts, Shortwave Nights. David Bryant from GYBE & Set Fire To Flames with some other guy from some other band. Not glitchy, not straight up drone, absolutely Constellation.
- Gnaw. Post-Khanate Alan Dubin. Dubin is still absolutely terrifying, but instead of Khanates amorphous free metal nightmares, his landscape is more pixelated. If William Gibson's Pattern Recognition had been about a snuff film, this band could be the sound track.
- Pan Sonic / Mika Vainio / 0. Much more electronic than anything else on the list. No guitars or anything of the like to be found. Machine music for matrix masturbation. Brilliant. Start with Gravitoni, Kilo, or Konstellaatio
- AANIPAA. Through a pre memory. Mika Vainio + Stephen OMalley + Alan Dubin and other nut jobs. Fucking brilliant. avant-evil.

Bjork. Labradford. Tim Hecker, Ben Frost. L Pierre. Flying Lotus. Yellow Swans. Tricky's Pre-Millenion Tension.

You should check anything from the catalogue of the Raster Noton label, particularly Alva Noto. Unitxt is a great Alva Noto album, for example.
Also, Ryoji Ikeda is always great, his latest album (Supercodex) is awesome. Christian Fennesz' album "Endless Summer" is an all-time favourite of mine too.
And I second the Oval recommendation, my favourite is still the old Systemisch. Same goes for Pan Sonic/Mika Vainio.

This album is excellent. I listened to a couple of others and they are great too. Really dig those chopped up vocals.

Working my way a few of these. Seems mostly good stuff so far.

This wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but I love it. It's absolutely foul. The other stuff you mentioned sounds decent, but possibly a little too drone for my tastes.

These two were especially good. I gave Unitxt a spin on Spotify. Super good.

If you liked Alva Noto and Ryoji Ikeda, you'll probably like many things on the Raster Noton label.
In the same genre, I also really like a Japanese artist called wk[es], the album "interface" is very good for example.

And if you want more ambient (sometimes glitchy but usually very good) electronic music, check Taylor Deupree or other things from his label 12k.

Live he's pretty awesome as well, I'd definitely recommend going if there's a chance, it's different every time.
I saw him with Just a Souvenir and Ufabulum, especially with Ufabulum he was really mindblowing, another of my favourite albums of his is Hard Normal Daddy.

+1!! Their post-reunion albums (2004 and on) are the ones to check out if you want the glitchy type stuff IMO.
