Jazzmaster: Slow Build

Post by Hyphen Nation »

Working on building up that body I had on B/S/T a few months back…lack of interest had me order a neck which should be getting here in a few weeks.

The body kind of begs for a Tele Deluxe inspired finish. I recently got a vintage JM, so this one will get Novak WRHB's [on the top of the sketch below]. The bottom image is more traditional, but I am not feeling it. The neck is at MJT to match the body relic…funny thing is I am not even a relic guy…just happened to luck out on the body and building what made sense with the finish.

First, a sketch:

Here is the actual body and a pick guard I had made for it:

Got a few parts this weekend as well.
Some buzz stop, so I could get things shielded and a surprisingly nice plate from Glenndale

This Glenndale stuff is awesome. Definitely makes me want to fast track a telemaster build with his stuff.

Waiting on Mastery Bridge and Trem.
I may get going on the electronics, but I am currently planning on getting the neck all set up first.

I love Glendale stuff as well. I have one of their no-cutout Tele plates on my Telemaster that I love.

Yeah, I had no idea about their quality. Definitely want to do some kind of Telemaster using Glendale hardware. I wish he'd do a full suite of offset parts.

In conjunction with the shield that will be on the back of the pick guard, it creates a bit of a faraday cage, canceling any interference and generally quieting down single coil pickups. The original Jazzmasters had brass lining the cavities and an aluminum pick guard for the same reason.

Wouldn't just taping the inside of the pickguard with the copper tape do the same thing. I did that when I did a shielding job on my Ibanez tele copy. Worked very well. People think I fitted it with noiseless pickups.

I achieve the best results by shielding both the guard and cavities. Very clean job so far.
Good deals: OsbornKT, Phantasmagorovich, UglyCasanova, DarkAxel, Skip, D.o.S, ColdBrightSunlight, Eivind August, Goroth

While waiting for parts to come in for the JM build, I found some Dimarzio SCHB's on craigslist for super cheap. I have not been a fan of the stock pickups in my LP Smartwood Exotic. I decided to swap these in for the 490/498 pair that came with the guitar. Pretty amazing difference. Not as high gain, not a huge a level gain with the bridge, but so much detail and dimension added to the signal. Apparently these sun on chrome logos were custom wound by Larry Dimarzio in the 70's and 80's.

Not sure why Amazon seems like the easiest place to find this stuff:
