Retubing an Ampeg VT-22

Post by aeonrevolution »

So, I'm kind of confused what sort of tubes I should be buying for this old guy.

http://www.fliptops.net/catalog/cat-100 ... ets?page=2

This site is pretty awesome for old Ampegs and has complete sets. I still have stock RCA tubes from somewhere around 1970 in my amp, but I basically have to dime Treble to get any semblance of a sparkly clean tone. A lot of the tubes are super dark looking too.

Basically I just want advice which set to buy. The Sylvania quads are ridiculously expensive......

You can use a 7072 or 7072a set. A cheaper option is a 6L6 set, basically the same thing as a modern 7072 but they have a couple extra pins but Ampeg V-series amps don't use those pins anyway.

My V-2 has been reformatted for KT88s and they sound huge and very well balanced. I prefer them to the stock RCA tubes I had before but they aren't the cheapest option either plus the bias section will need to be redone by a tech.

Just shop around for best prices when you settle on a tube.

LS Electronics just went through my amp a few months back and did a full checkup, retube, bias, and some other minor maintenance for a very fair price. :thumb:

Yeah I love LS Electronics. They fixed my amp when I was trying to chain it out at 2ohms and kept blowing the fuse/capacitor :D

Yeah. I think you actually recommended those guys to me awhile back. The amp techs there def know their shit when it comes to old Ampegs.

I have ĶT-88s in my VT-40, they sound great! Better than the 6550s that were in the amp when I bought it.

New tubes will definitely make your tone knobs work again. You don't need fancy NOS shit. Fresh, decent quality tubes (JJ, EHX, Sovtek) will blow your mind after being used to worn out tubes.
