Tascam US 1800 audio interface questions.

Post by KaosCill8r »

Hey all. I'm thinking of buying one of these interfaces. Need it for tracking a full drum kit. But having extra inputs will always come in handy. The specs look good on paper it but I thought I'd get some opinions from you guys.

Does anyone have one of these?
How good do the preamps sound?
How stable are the drivers?
Just how good are they?
Are they worth the bucks or are they just cheap shit packaged to look good?
Overall are you happy with it?

I've had mine for several months.

Win7/64 drivers dead stable, using Tracktion 5 as my DAW.

Preamps sound damn decent, not a lot of character but well, it is what it is.

The costcutting on the unit was the phantom power for the XLRs is switched on/off 4 at a time (1-4, 5-8). Be aware also that if you're looking at analog inputs, it has 14 - they count the SPDIF as a stereo pair (which it is and I use).

I've done most of my recordings at 24/44-48 because frankly I'm not recording piano music for sensitive souls and can't hear a practical difference in any of the 24 bit settings (which again, are damn decent).

Power supply is external, non-wallwart (one of the inline deals) as an added bonus.

Well worth the bucks if you need the track count, there's NOTHING else even close or in its league.

I am running a beast of a machine though, no idea how it runs on cheaper stuff - I have a friend who does it from his relatively sedate (think i5) laptop. I'm on a I7-4770k and track count is something I've never hit a limit on.

I regularly use all 16 tracks (and have a couple other devices slaved in ASIO4ALL) as I want to be able to mix later and have dedicated taps on each rack unit plus multiple amps/mics.

There are horror stories out there but there are with any interface at this point, and all the angry seems to have been from the first run of drivers.

No worries. Yeah I will be trying it first on an older computer. 2.6 MHz pentium 4 with win xp. But plan on upgrading by the end of the year anyway. I think it will suit my needs quite well. And yeah I don't think I will be recording piano music for sensitive souls anyway either. I'm sure it will suit my fuzzy lo-fi noise rock style fine with lower recording quality settings. Thanks for your input. :thumb:

XP I would triple and quadruple check. That would be true of about any audio interface made recently.

Does it even have USB 2.0 ports?

Yeah it has USB 2.0 ports. And if it doesn't work on my xp loaded computer I plan on upgrading to a new computer this year. But I do think it says in the specs that it is windows xp compatible. Oh and I made a mistake. It is 2.6 MHZ not MHZ processor.
