I live in the middle of nowhere also. Finding a tech nearby can be a pain. I'd recommend calling any of the music stores within driving distance, sure guitar center doesn't have a tech on site. But most of the guys working behind the counter are typically musicians that are well established in the area and are having there gear serviced somewhere, and those guys will usually put you in touch with someone skilled that they would normally trust.
Actually was my situation this morning as my traynor ate through yet another power tube, grid resistors are looking iffy, think my 40 year old beast could be due for a cap job as the thing is close to stock.
Bench fee will vary usually between $60-$80 per hour. Thats the range I was quoted at today, and was introduced to a new local pedal builder also that goes by Option5 so also get to try out a bunch of new effects when I drop my beast off.

Re: Amp tech in middle of nowhere? (wisconsin)
Some Guitar Centers do have amp techs. The one I work at has two guitar techs and only one of them does amp repair. But yeah, call around, if they don't have an amp tech they probably have somebody who knows an amp tech.
