Garage renovation into a Music spot/studio/office

Post by Deltaphoenix »

Hey guys and gals. I figured this might be a cool place to document the renovation of my garage into a music space. This project has about a $3500 budget so it is actually fairly cheap in the realm of renovations. I have a buddy helping me out. He is going back to school for a construction Project Manager degree, has a ton of tools and is great carpenter plus he is a good drummer. I used to work in construction but am not a carpenter so I am the helper and Ben is the lead on this project.
About 1/3 of the budget went to building a shed onto the back of my garage, so I could move my tools, lawn maintenance stuff and store bikes, etc. in there.
I will start to upload pics of the shed tomorrow. Plus I have a cool vid from demoing the interior of the garage.

Nice! $3,500 can go a long way when you're doing much of the work by yourself. :)

If you end up needing acoustic panels, let me know. I have a local source who, last I checked, had a bunch of premium quality panels for extremely cheap. They were originally ordered for our $10M library, but the manufacturer cut them to the wrong size. They were entirely unusable, and the cost to return them was greater than what they are worth. They were/are sitting in on a pallet in a warehouse, waiting for the distributor to get "whatever he can" for them.

1" thick OC-703, professionally wrapped in fire-resistant muslin, with pre-installed aluminum z-channel hangers. They sell for $35/sq ft, but I got 'em for $1.50/sq ft. I have $7k in panels on my walls, and I only paid $300.

I would be happy to call for you to see if they have any left, and go snap a photo if you were seriously interested. You would have to drive up here to get them, but I'm only 3 hours north. If you get $5k in panels for $200, it is probably worth it.

whoah
thats a good hookup mike
and yeah $3500 doin the work yourself
thats gonna be a sweet space
i salvaged most of the materials from other jobs
of course i woulda liked a 5 gal of green glue
speaking of that
this has alot of good info here
http://www.greengluecompany.com/technical-library
page 2 & 3 has diagrams of wall construction
showing which configurations block the most sound
wether you use their products or not
if you can go double layer decoupled everywhere
than good for you
if not, this shows how to get the most out of what you got
space and materials wise
if i could do it again, with more money
i would have wanted 5/8 drywall
i used salvaged acoustical drop ceiling tiles
someday ill laminate the whole thing in drywall

I will find a few more of it being built and what it looks like finished.
The shed is 12' x 8'.
I ended up taking shelves that were in garage and installing them in there, along hooks to hold weed eaters and power cords, etc. So I am getting a ton of use out of all the space in it.

It is actually completed now . I put a metal roof on it, it has a 1/2 on 12 pitch. Built it strong, hurricane straps, etc.

Here is what it looks like now (blurry pic, sorry):

Being that you're in Florida -- are you going to condition the air to protect your gear (and make it a place you are able to hang out in during the summer)? It gets a little sticky down there...
