Necks

Post by O Drones »

What do people generally dig? Skinny, massive, other? I'm looking at an SG that has a "50's neck". I tried it out today and compared to my Tele and my Jazzy it seemed HUGE,
but super comfy. So....necks? I know fucking nothing about them.

Not super picky, but I like a chunky neck. Warmoth's Fatback necks are kind of my sweet spot.

I dig them on the thinner side if I can help it. I almost can't play boat necks. The obstructures aluminum neck I had was a little too thin. The most perfect neck that I currently use is on my Nelson. Somewhere between a MIM Tele and MIM Strat neck in terms of thickness and profile. I also really dig Warmoths 'standard thin' which is not quite a shredder neck

Fat necks all day. Except my 335 has a skinny neck and I love it, so who knows?

60s Fender C-range, with a 9.5" radius.

Pretty much the standard for their line for a long time except vintage reissues.

In all seriousness though, my favourite neck on any guitar I ever had was a Wizard HP. The problem was it gave me pretty intense pain after a while from the way you need to grip it when you're not in shredder mode.
Now my favourites are the similarly thin but really narrow neck on my Peavey T15 which is fun as hell, and the satin-finished C-shape on the Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster. Love that neck. Aiming for a slightly thinner version of that on my Harvester.

I would say don't be afraid to go with something you're not normally used to if it really does feel comfortable, but make sure it works for every aspect of your playing style. I like those big SG necks but I would never own one because i find them difficult for tapping and complex chord shapes, but it all comes down to the individual.

I like V-shape alot, and the standard C-shape. Had a PRS Custom once, that had a great neck, but it looked like something a peacock would be ashamed to use, and way to pricey to keep with my limited skillz.

Love a neck like a baseball bat. My 71 Ibanez Tele copy has a neck like that and it feels so comfy in my hand. Good leverage to get big string bends and vibrato. Cant stand wafer thin shredder guitar necks. There is just nothing there to hang on to. I'm no shredder anyways so there is no need to get a guitar like that anyway. But each to there own.

I find as time goes on and my playing has evolved, I've gravitated to thicker necks. I don't know why and maybe it has just been less of an issue and I just liked those guitars better for the sound but there is a definite trend there.

When I picked up my mij Epiphone SG (the domestic market one with open book headstock), I fell in love with that neck. It's a slim 60's taper that just feels right. I think it's because it's coated in nitro paint and feels a little worn in.

I like necks chunky as well. Not baseball bat-style but def bigger than say a Gibson slim 60's neck. My only guitar with a little thinner profile is my Maton MS500 but that neck is fantastic in it's own way and super fast.
