ProCo Mods

Post by OrangeSunn »

ProCo Mods? Been looking at a few websites about this. Just looking to experiment, hoping to get the best out of this pedal. I don't modify by myself at all. Although, there was one mod that popped up that indicated cutting out a resister/compositor that would add more gain and tighter bass. Then there's this other mod called the four headed rat. Seems like a pretty sweet mod. Does anyone have experience in anything Rat mod related? Like and dislikes? In the end, I'm likely gonna be pairing it up with my OxFuzz as a slight gain/boost.

The most common rat mods I see are the reutz mod, the diode mod, and the cap mod. The reutz is switching out one 470 ohm resistor for a pot so you can smooth out the gain a bit. The diode mod is basically putting the diodes on a switch so you can change up the gain character a bit. Usually it is between the normal silicon diodes and LEDs from the turbo rat. Sometimes the switch also has a middle position to take all the diodes out of the circuit so it is more like an overdrive then a distortion. The cap mod is simple changing a few capacitors to allow for more bass, typically this is done for bass.

TBH, I have no idea how much better it could sound as it stands, but, I'm very tempted to send it out.

The reutz mod is very easy. I de-soldered one end of both resistors from the board, then connected them to 2 spdt switches. One switch cuts some gain and and treble and the other switch cuts some gain and bass from the circuit. I plan on a diode mod switch next. Stock silicon one side and germanium on the other. They are great pedals to learn modding on. Save some cash and do it yourself. Lots of mods out there.

I tried soldering once. It reminded me how bad I was at welding.

It really doesn't look difficult either. So one day I decided to switch out pups. I did it. It worked. I just feel bad for the next guy that has to clean up that popcorn mess. Lol

Practice by making your own patch cables. Also steer clear of that environmentally friendly lead free solder. It is shit. Find yourself some good lead/tin mix solder. Not sure if they sell it in the states. I cant find it anywhere in Australia. I get mine on e/bay from china.

That's a very good idea. Something like that, I could handle making mess with.
