Delays that DON"T pitch shift when turning delay knob?

Post by trace »

So I just got a used Danelectro Reel Echo from Sam Ash yesterday and there are some things I don't like about it (kinda short delay time, repeat knob has "steps", etc.) The main reason I got it was for the stutter you get when you adjust the delay slider while playing, instead of just the usual pitch bend. Does anyone know of any other delays that do this? Maybe one of the Boss DDs? I've been googling but can't find much, probably because I dont really know how to describe the effect. :idk:

Most of the Boss DDs do it as far as I know. One that I sold only because it didn't do it was the TC Electronic Nova delay. Pretty good delay pedal but it didn't get crazy enough for me haha. You can try one at a Guitar Center or something

Boss DD 3 and 7 pitch shift. Don't know the same about the others. ^^^ And thats the same reason I got rid of my Nova Repeater  Some peds with tap tempo do what you look for when you use the tap. But some just cut the delays and some still shift.

The Digidelay doesn't stutter on most of the settings... at least it doesn't on the tape/analog sim. At least mine doesn't.. it still has the "standard" delay time knob speed shift going on.

you can make sweet glitch loops on the Boss RV-3 when you crank the repeats and turn the delay knob. It's awesome.

The nova delay is frustratingly tame. Probably my least favourite delay out of those i've tried  It does excel at some things, though, depends what you're looking for.

Not familiar with how that specific one stutters.

Would need an audio sample to put you in the realm of other ones that stutter like it.

Most of the older digital delays do if you adjust the time knob while repeats are going, it wasn't a feature that most folks wanted (and I personally was very very glad to see pitch adjustable delays more similar to tape finally come out in the digital realm 10ish years ago as a relatively standard feature).

Not surprised that's what the Reel Echo does though, it was pretty old tech even when it was new (as evidenced by the delay times). Guessing from what I've heard of them used "normally" it's whatever cheap circuit Dano could recycle with some filtering on it in a pretty package. So look for what was new circa '92-93 and you're probably in the ballpark.

The digitech X series digidelay does not pitch shift when you change the time except in the 'tape' mode. I think it has 3 delay ranges too for his non pitch shiftiness, with the longest one maxing out around 4 seconds.

Yea, the Digi stuff is based on what it thinks it's faking - Timebender does different things in different modes (tape speeds up but takes a sec to stabilize, head moved but tape pitch stays the same, or delay time changes and the sample in memory being echoed remains roughly the same pitch, etc), same as the X series and a couple of their other newish (post '05) pedals.

TC Nova Repeater doesn't do that. Probably the reason the damn thing has been glued to my board since like 2010 is that it actually holds together with drastically long decay settings.

Thanks everyone! I'll see if I can do a sound sample of the danelectro this weekend, it's a cool effect that I've never really seen talked about when people discuss delays. I'll have to keep an eye out for some of the digitech delays to try out.

Oh, didn't know that! I only run it in tape mode

The Vox Delaylab makes some super crazy glitchy noises when you adjust the time with the sync button on. Not pitch shift, more like fucked computer noises.
