pick up wiring problems

Post by AlexanderWOLF »

I installed my first pick up in the bridge position a while back. After I hooked it all up the neck pickup didn't work anymore. I didn't care at the time because the guitar still needed more work. Now I'm working on it and trying to resolve this problem.

It seems like the middle position and neck position on the switch don't work (I never took apart the switch) When the selector is in the middle I don't get any sound from the bridge pick up, only when it's in bridge only do I get sound.

The wiring looks okay to me, what could be the problem?

My soldering job is pretty bad but I didn't touch anything related to the bridge pick up so I don't get it. Is it some kind of ground issue most likely?

If I tap the neck PU while it's in bridge position I get sound, not the full sound like the pick up is on, but it makes noise. Plus there i buzzing when the switch is in bridge, like idle feedback sound. As soon as I move it out of bridge position, no idle buzzing or anything, no sound from tapping on either PU

oh god its something really simple, wires touching somewhere, when I move the pickguard around i can get it to work

ok so... When I touch the the stock wiring coming from the neck PU to the neck PU itself, it works. I know nothing about wiring what does this mean?

welp I dont know what I did and now it's working fuck my life, it's gonna get messed up again

Sounds like a grounding issue. Try reflowing your solder joints.

Yeah, it sounds like a bad connection. Take a look at a diagram that matches how your wiring it meant to be and resolder it. When you're doing it, put a glob of solder on where the wire is meant to go, place wire on solder and heat it up. Add more solder if needed, and then repeat with other pickup. When you think you're done, tap a screwdriver on the pickup while plugged into an amp (keep volume low) and make sure it works before putting your guitar back together.

Just take your time and follow the diagram and you'll be fine.

It works now. I moved the wire around that was coming out of the neck pick up and it works? Put it all back together, dropped to DROP B because A was too floppy.

Have not gotten to play it out of my real amp yet tho.
