Give me your Ideas for my EGC

Post by bronzetalon »

I've had the following EGC chessie for about a year now. The smaller switch is currently a phase switch for the single coils. I've found that I don't use this ever. I'm wanting to either cover it up or replace the switch with something different or more useful. Maybe a momentary kill button. Give me your ideas!!!

I've got an idea for your EGC. You should give it to me.

I promise to use the shit out of it. Including the phase switch.

No, but seriously, folks, I think a kill switch is a great idea. Or a crazy tone circuit. Or a tone bypass.

I'd go the "straight up bridge pup to the output jack with electronics bypassed" way

I like the kill switch idea although you can already do that by turning one pickup down and using the 3-way. The dedicated kill switch is probably more effective/smoother.

Tone bypass might be more useful in the long run (maybe) while the kill switch would be more fun here and there.

I put kill switches in a couple cheapo project guitars before, and I think you may have a hard time finding a switch that is soft/responsive enough to use effectively as a kill switch that will fit in a hole that small. An arcade machine style switch works best but you would obviously have to ream that hole out for that. Personally I have found that I prefer using the pickup selector switch like Holy Schnikes said ^^^^. The switch on my kramer is great for this because it seems almost spring loaded toward the middle position so you can flick it super fast.

Put a tiny fuzz circuit inside and set it up with trimmers how you like it and switch it on with the switch
Im aware this idea is almost entirely impractical

Not at all! My bass has a preamp that no longer works, thus I have a toggle switch and 3 pots that do nothing...well the toggle gets used as a kill switch occasionally for hard trem chops. Been meaning to build something into it but can't ever decide what.

Maybe some switchable filtering cap to achieve some cocked wah-like sounds, if you're into that stuff?

Would be something like switching position #3 described here: http://www.premierguitar.com/articles/11583

Personally I'd keep the phase switch. I really like the sound of out of phase pickups with fuzz. As others have said you can easily get a quasi killswitch with your pickup selector switch so it seems a little redundant to me.
