ARC Crimson King with AC30?

Post by Jules-RM »

Hi there,

I've had GAS for the CK for a while, wondering if anyone has had a good experience with the pairing of the CK and an AC30. I mainly use humbucker guitars.

The only two fuzz pedals that I completely love on the AC30 are the BAT Fnord and the Catbread Manx. Just looking for something different and I love anything red and black. Apart from black widow spiders, I don't like them. :|:

Mainly thinking it might be good for leads, seems it has some upper octave stuff going on at higher gain levels.

Thanks!

fwiw, i've had great success with my burns buzzaround and pigdog spectrafuzz clone with my ac15. I also find the ac15 sounds great with everything i throw at it. In the end, you'll never know until your ears get a listen.

I had the Crimson King but replaced it recently with the EQD Sound Shank. I've run both through my Science Amplification Shiv (AC30 based but with more EQ control and a dirt channel) and I much prefer the Sound Shank.

The Sound Shank's simple level control seems to work better, just boosting output while leaving the Timbre control alone, allowing it to go anywhere from super thin and shrill to bass heavy and thick and mean. The Crimson King uses an interactive design like the original Burns labeling controls Timbre and Balance. I can't always dial it in how I want as a result. While balance boosts output, it also affects Timbre and overall tone so I can't always retain the sound I want when I get it to the volume I need. Sounds kinda shrill and gated through my Shiv honestly.

That's no knock on the CK. It sounded great through my bigger kt88 amps. I just prefer the control and extended range I get with the EQD. Plus I can mimic the CK tones with the Sound Shank without a problem but not the other way around. :thumb:

Those amps look tasty.

Prymaxe seems to be sold out of the Sound Shanks. For some reason EQD pedals just don't get on with me, I haven't tried one I completely like. Hoof was sort of ok, but in the end I just didn't like it.

Uncle is probably right, just need to bite the bullet and just try it. They seem to disappear quite quickly on the resale market.

Science stuff is awesome.

And yeah, I don't usually get on with EQD dirt either. I have a Sound Shank and Zap Machine and like 'em quite a bit though. I think both were limited production, guess that explains why the SS is sold out.

I also made the transition from the CK to the SS and your description hits it on the head. The CK's controls are pretty interactive, so it's tough to get the perfect blend of volume, gatedness/splattyness, and eq-ing. They both sound pretty similar (the SS might be a little more modern sounding/tighter), so it was a pretty easy decision to make the switch.

How does the SS go after OD pedals? Some fuzz pedals prefer to be first in chain, but I think I'm looking for something to go AFTER my Fnord, which likes to be fed by a Timmy. The Timmy>Fnord>Pharaoh sounded pretty darn good on my other amp, but for some reason doesn't do it for me on the AC30.

I'm having an Elements fixed up for me by Ryan, that might just do it. But for some reason US/Canada shipping seems to take forever for me.

I went ahead and put a order in at Prymaxe for the Sound Shank... They got new ones in this week, we'll see how it goes.

Got the Sound Shank in today, very easy to dial in, sounds great with the knobs in more than one spot, which I appreciate. Sounds best on it's own, but doesn't mind having a Timmy in front. Thinking of trying it first. I'm in the middle recording a lot, so I don't have a lot of time for practice right now to really put it through its paces.
