This is exactly what they did in the 80s and 90s and 00s....why should they be any different now?
They're chasing what they think their target market wants, and these days it's 'overdrive' with 'true bypass' - it used to be weird synth effects when new-wave was in, then fuzz pedals during grunge, wacky post-rock stuff to cop the Radiohead vibe, etc.
