How to yellow (age) a new guitar?

Post by heartben »

Hey guys!

I was curious if any of you know if there is a way to age/yellow a new guitar without putting more paint on top.

That's pretty much it.

Thanks! :joy:

Well, it was worth a try, right?

How about tea, cigarette smoke and/or waiting 20 years?

Maybe try taking the clear coat off and exposing it to the sun a lot?

The clear coats on nitro finished guitars is what yellows, I'm not sure how well it works on poly though.

Yep. If it's nitro just leave it in direct sunlight and/or smoky rooms. If it's poly I don't know that there's much you can easily do.

I know you said without adding layers......But you can buy some good, easy to use clear tints from Reranch. This will definitely work.

I had a white Squier once, tried everything and nothing happened. was PoLY XD, but then magically, after 20 years, it turns banana :D
your first step is to figure out if its Polyurethane or Nitrocellulose finish. if Nitro, everything will work, if Poly Nothing will work other than time ;)

I've heard of guys that make smoke shacks to age guitars and use different shit to burn... They had 1000's of cigs burning and the guitars were hanging from the rafters like meat...
