VM Jazzmaster/Jaguar etc etc around $250ish? I haven't looked what they are going for now. Really any Squier if you are planning on experimenting

Squiers are good. I like some used Fernandes, too. Godin can be ridonkulously cheap used, especially for their more entry-level guitars, which are usual steals if they don't get ruined by the first-time owner.

any Squier in the VM range upwards. worth every cent.

plus old MIJ/MIK stuff like Aria Pro II, Vantage etc. that pops up in the classifieds can be awesome. And old MIA Peaveys.
