Bass cab recommendations?

Post by ichbin »

Hey all,

So i'm currently playing an Ampeg SVT 4 Pro through a home made cab that I was given. The cab was never up to much and I really need to get something solid. It'll need to be a second hand cab as i've not got the funds for anything brand spanking new. I've played through SVT 810s so I know what they sound like (I like, obviously depending on which one!), and was wondering what else is out there? I've been recommended the Aguilar GS412 but they're quite difficult to find second hand. Thoughts?

Have you considered 215's at all?
They pop up for good prices every now and again.
Maybe a 610?

I'm thinking somewhere around £600. And tonally, something fairly versatile - but mainly something pretty punchy. I use Thunder Birds at the moment.

If u want punchy 10's are the way to go, a fridge would probably be your best bet. Just watch your local classifieds for a used one.

Yeah, kind of the standard. We've gotten "punchy" from bass designed 4x12's as well as my sunn 2x15 and the oddball Gk 4412h I have

Anyone tried the Aguilar GS412s? I've heard they're a helluva lot lighter to shift around.

Since it appears you're in the UK, I would check out a used Barefaced Vintage 215. I've heard that thing kills. It would be nice if I could find one here. The newer Laney 810s are supposed to be nice and pretty light/compact.

+1. Aguilar is one of the few bass amp companies out there that actually looks at making a speaker cabinet suited for bass players, instead of just throwing a speaker in a box and calling it good. Even their 10" cabinets are deeper sounding than many competitors. Probably helps that most everyone that works there is a bass player.

HUGE +1, especially if you can find the pre-Fender SWR cabs. Still kicking myself for selling my Goliath.
