The Great Wall! - the story, talk, price?

Post by FuzzHugger »

Okay, a lot of you have been following this story, but I'll lay it out here.

I originally decided to build a huge wall of fuzz with lots of knobs and controlability. I basically did it just for myself, but mentioned it to a couple people. At one point, posted it on the site as "in development" (and then forgot that I did!)

And before I knew it, there were people emailing about it and posting on the (old) discussion board about it.

I did some prototyping of it and got really close to what I wanted. Five knobs, a tone control w/bypass, and quadruple si+ge diodes.
Then CliffBass came along with some specific needs, and I thought the Great Wall sounded like what he was looking for.
Cliff had asked for his to be modded for extra bass. And after hearing that, it became my fav!

It's a potentially messy build, so it's got fun multi-colored straight/angled wiring. :joy:

Also, Cliff helped design the graphics that ended up on his, and I'm really liking those, too!
In fact, I built two of them like his.

So the result is a fuzz packed twice as dense and twice as gained-up as the Algal Bloom, lots of gain and bass, available, lots of sustain, some unique decay going on...
---> So now, I'm in love with the pedal and want to add it to the FuzzHugger(fx) lineup. I'm looking for some input!! Price?

Ooooo... DO WANT! Dang youze devious pedal builders! Just when I think I'm done with the fuzz section of my board (aka most of my board), you find a way to drag me back in! :excellent:

I guess my question would be, how does it compare in work/parts to the other FH(fx) pedals? One of the things I love about Devi's approach is that she has pretty clearly defined tiers of pedals - if you're looking at an artifact, you know it's going to be in the $90 range. If you're looking at a deluxe pedal like the Shoegazer or Rocket, you know it will be a different price-point. I think that helps in the marketing - people know ahead of time what they're going to need to shell out. So, if this is about the same amount of work as the Algal Bloom or AbSynth, maybe keep it as close to the same as possible.

Of course, if it's more work for you, you should be paid for that extra work, so maybe this could define the next "level up" from the AB & AS...

I really appreciate the input. It's top tier, because of the extra work and parts with the tone circuit, the added toggle, and I actually do some dremel work inside to get those pots in straight across the top.
But I've got the wiring down inside, and I want to keep it reasonable as possible.

My goal's to build and sell maybe four really great fuzz designs...eventually, I hope it'll be like one pedal per tier.

When I played the YouTube demo for a friend, I said "I want to try this on bass!" To which he responded, "Wait - that guy in the video isn't playing bass?"

I guess you got it bottom-heavy enough, Tom! :omg:

the first one should be sold to me for $1.00. After i get it, $200.

:thumb: haha, sounds reasonable!

I'm thinking $149...I've still gotta crunch some numbers and listen to some more suggestions!

I would've expected it to be more than $149, but a lot of your pedals sell for less than I think they should :P

 Cool! And yes, it's safe to say it's being greenlit! It'll be part of a stable FuzzHugger(fx) lineup, with the Algal Bloom and AB-Synth.

(Still trying to figure out the best way to offer the Hugger--parts configuration(?), special order(?), special finishes(?)...but that's another thread!)

:) I try to keep it that way--affordable for as many people as possible!

Dag; Cliff is getting some thing before I do!

If it's that dark with guitar, it should be killer with bass.

I'll have to order one for my self.
