What kind of booster?

Surely no-one uses line level stuff... They have phone plugs and stuff on them!

I have line level stuff for synths and drum machines, but I've messed around with guitar through them too. Lots of line level effects will also take instrument level signals without a booster. Sometimes you get a higher noise floor, but that depends on what you're using. Also, the majority of them still have 1/4" jacks. I like Electrix stuff quite a bit.

Metasonix TM-5 or SHO. Both works great with line level stuff.

The only line level stuff I use is my modular (which has a module to amplify instrument level signals up to line level) or a couple of the Alesis ModFX units, which have an input gain trimmer to bring the signal level up.

I was wondering about making something that ramps up - and ramps down... But maybe there's no big need for it. Plus could work as a regular booster, maybe with some kind of treble boost switch too...

like i said above, SHO or TM-5

self built pedal with a potentiometer to "tame" the level

I think the people that use metasonix stuff with guitar amps need sth. like that. But these are less than 100 worldwide and i asume everybody came up with a solution already. So i don't think there will be a big market... :idk:
