Any advice on snipping nylon tape-wound strings

I've got a set of long-scale D'Addario tape-wounds, which have flat nylon ribbon over roundwound strings. My intent is to put these on the missus' short-scale Epi bass. The great and powerful Google tells me that at least one Talkbass forum person has done this, but to follow up directly I'd have to join TB. So I'm hoping someone here can be my sherpa/guru/guy-with-a-computer-and-advice-that-is-not-obviously-insane-at-first-blush.

My concern is that if I cut the strings to length, the windings, particularly the tape wind, will unravel instantly or in pretty short order. Is there a recommended handling to get this not to happen? Do I need to recycle silks from the old set to hold things together? Is a pre-bend at the cut spot enough to stop the unraveling? Something else to stop the tape, like crazy glue or clear nail polish?

The tuners need a bit of string in the post, like old Tele and Strat Tuners. Full wound width of the E wouldn't have fit. What I did was cut on the silks, leaving just enough to go in on the E and G, a bit more on the A and D since they're further from the nut. A few extra winds on the E, but not unreasonable. I figure the bit of silks left should hold things together reasonably.

Sounds and feels good with the tapes. The Epi sounds more "bass" than it did with the round-wounds. Tempted to try some on my 35" scale Dearmond, too.
