'63 Fender Jazzmaster Refin w/ non-original neck

Post by sun baked snow cave »

Does this not seem a little outrageous to you guys?

http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/msg/3979005027.html

He has it listed at $2100...

- all parts neck
- non original tremolo arm
- non original knobs
- non original tuners
- wacky refin

And yes.. I am looking for a refinished vintage jazzy, because I don't have $3500 to spend at this moment.

I think that's nuts. It's not even an original neck and half of the stuff has been replaced, so you're pretty much just getting a vintage body and pickups. Are those really worth $2k to you?

I DO like that refin though. I've got a thing for natural stains though. Chop him down to $1100 or $1000 and I think you might have an okay-ish deal

I am not too into the stained sides at all really. Looks very 80's esque and wacky.

I don't know, maybe seeing it in person could change my mind.

What a freaking ridiculous price though!

Seems like it miiiight be a bit shady. "Oh yeah, it's totally vintage. I know these other parts have been replaced, but trust me....." :erm:

I don't know my vintage guitars (at all, really) but I'd try to get some kind of evidence it's actually what he says it is, even if you want to talk him down. It's not like you can check the serial or something. Did pre-CBS guitars have serials on the necks?

Edit: That finish/refinish sure looks fucking cool, though, IMO.

Unless you play this guitar and it speaks to you like the voice of a honest to Hoyle miracle, run.

You're not even really buying a refinned body at that point to be honest - it's been so mangled to get to that level and lose a neck that there is no way in hell I'd even consider $500 for it.

You are literally lighting money on fire buying this.

No original neck, not a vintage Fender IMO.

And so many of the Jazzmasters got hacked and parted to make fake Strat necks that true cheapies are very, very hard to find.

Authenticity on refins is also very difficult, talking the refins where the neck is intact etc. as well. I would only buy from a long-time reputable dealer or one I had a relationship with as well - especially on the non-prime vintage stuff that only some of the niche dealers truly know well.

My pedalboard costs approximately 191 Metal Zones.

Exactly. So much has been changed that I don't think this is a 'vintage' Jazzmaster anymore, it's just a JM that happens to have an old body and electronics. I'd buy an AVRI over this any day.
