Good cab for '67 Bassman head?

Post by patrick »

Might be getting a '67 Bassman head for $600 soon (seems like a steal to me), I was wondering what kind of cab would work best with this? I'm not sure what the wattage is on it, but I know I probably won't need anything bigger than a 2x12, seeing as I'm only playing 80-capacity rooms at the largest right now.

'67 will be a 50 watt head.

I was always partial to JBL 1x15s in a closed back cab with my old Bassmans, but have used everything from a 2x15 to a 4x12 without incident.

Price seems high unless it's got documented, by a real tech you trust service very recently.

$600 is def on the high side!

I've played a 50W '65 thru a Fender 2x15 and it sounded INCREDIBLE!

Well, the guy offered to retube it as well for that price, so that seems fair.

Either way, was thinking about 15s too, interesting those got brought up

Was gonna suggest a 2x15 or 1x15 as well.

I played one of these through a 2x15 as well. Incredibly ballsy.

I always had just used club cabs with mine. I found that I wasn't a big fan of using 4x12s with it. For whatever reason that was always very dark. I had a cheap 2x10 that sounded pretty good with it. those amps are fucking great, by the way.

The 4x12s that worked required that the speakers NOT be Celestions generally.

Thus began my avoidance of them, which generally continues to this day.

I rehoused mine in a 2x10 combo and it was an awesome amp. I really miss that amp.

So it would appear the consensus is "whatever you play the damn thing through is gonna sound amazing because they're amazing amps". Though somewhere out there is a cab with a series of 10s, 12s and 15s waiting to be made! I sure wouldn't want to load that in and out each night. But I'm sure it'll sound epic!

I play a 65 Alamo Paragon Bass which sounds a lot like a bassman through a sunn 215b and it sounds REALLY good. 15s are not as dark as you think they are, I get plenty of nice bright tones if I'm after that.

Also, whatever you do, make sure you turn the volume to 10.

You guys saying 600 bucks is steep for a 67 Bassman feels like being kicked in the stomach. In the UK that thing would be twice that. I got lucky and managed to score a 70s silverface for about 450USD. That's really cheap here. I run that through a 70s Orange 4x12 with old Greenbacks in. Sounds good but I've always wondered how it would sound through some Jensen alnico 10s.
