when an amp is not an option...

Post by drehpehs »

I play at a church where they won't allow me to use my amp... Basically I'd just been going: Guitar > pedalboard > Passive DI Box > mixer, recently I got an active DI box, which is an improvement (but it's behringer, so it's not that big of an improvement). Any suggestions?

the ethos is a little pricey. Would something like the H&K Redbox work?

a di box always sounds like a di box, the more expensive ones wont sound any better than the behringer (which does a good job)
maybe you could try some kind of amp modeller like a sansamp or a digital one

I'm curious,

if they allow you to plug into the monitors, then why aren't you aloud to use an amplifier? It would be easier, and would sound better to mic a small combo amp...

I know they're not considered "cool" around here, but Tech 21's character series pedals sound really good. Each one does a pretty convincing imitation of a specific amp. I've tried the Vox and Hiwatt models and they're both pretty damned good. Run on of those before the DI and it'll sound decently close to an amp.

I'll second this. they get mixed reviews from people using them other ways, but they sound really good when plugged straight into the board. I have the fender and orange ones. the fender one especially works very well, and gets along with pedals just like you'd expect a fender to. the orange one is significantly louder than the fender and doesn't work that well with fuzz pedals in my experience. I do like the orange one with bass, though.
