Didn't know where to post a question so here is it:
Why is there such a volume loss when switching in and out the clipping stages?

It's just the nature of clipping diodes in general. Take the diodes out of any sort of clipping role in a pedal and it's an instant volume boost!

Think of the diodes 'limiting' the signal as it cuts off the top and bottom of the waveform, use a diode that limits less (higher fV), get more signal back so louder, take them out entirely so there's no limiting (other than the opamp signal swing) and it's as loud as it's getting.

Here are some pics that might help. A sine wave is like a radically simplified signal from a note on your guitar. The amplitude of the wave (how high and low it goes on the Y axis) is kinda volume. So you can see that any clipping will reduce the volume. The Elements has symmetrical and asymmetrical clipping options.
