Knas Moisturizer or Sherman Filterbank2

Post by Deltaphoenix »

I have decided to go back with a MP-201 controlled CV funtime pedal set-up. I have also decided that I want a serious filter as part of my set-up. The Filterbank 2 is supposed to be crazy good- AM, FM, 2 VCFs, 2 VCAs, LFO, Env Generator, tons of CV and Midi control. It has a an input for a pedal to turn it on/off. I was thinking of getting the desktop version and velcroing it to the upper tier on my board. The Filterbank is supposed to have BALLS, does a dirty/aggressive sound very nicely.

The KNAS Ekdahl Moisturizer is a spring reverb with a very nice Multimode Filter. The Spring is exposed for nice making. The Filter has no resonance limiting and there is a nice LFO (with an LFO out in the back). There is a good amount of CV control. I would want to do the Mod that is a switch that switches the order of the reverb and filter (normally it is reverb>filter). Maybe also the resonance bubble mod. There is no footswitch for on/off but I could put it in a true bypass loop. The Moisturizer could be used as a sound source for fun weirdness.

I have started selling a good chunk of my gear. The Moisturizer is more affordable ,used for $350ish vs $650ish for a used Filterbank 2. I plan to use this piece of gear on my bass pedal board, I will run my beats from the Tempest through it, I will have fun CVing it up with the Mountainking Channel Chief drone synth that I have coming.
The main attraction that I have to the Filterbank is that it is essentially an analog synth without oscillators, that means a ton of flexibility. The Moisturizer is a great piece of kit, I feel like it would be worthwhile to own and it could hold down my needs for awhile until I could afford the FIlterbank 2 and run them together.
Basically, I want both, eventually. The Filterbank 2 would cut a good bit deeper and I am getting down to only having gear I want to keep left.

Anybody have first hand experience with either of these boxes?

A friend of mine has the Sherman but I never heard much useful sounds out of it to be honest, all it seems to do is just nasty nasty nasty, it's either that or my friend and me really don't know how to work it I guess. :idk:
How about the Vermona Filter Lancet or Retroverb Lancet, did you consider those too?
Also the Jomox Moonwind is supposed to be really good I hear.

I have been considering the Vermona Filter Lancet. I have heard it is kind of vanilla sounding, good but sterile. Do you have any experience with one?

From my understanding, the Filterbank can do subtle but excels at dirty/nasty, it is about turning down the gain and volume a lot though. I have heard that the Filterbank is a beast to tame for sure.

No experience with the Vermona stuff, it just popped into my mind.
It all depends on what you want to do offcourse.
That Sherman sure is a beast.

Delta, if you want your Mp-201 back let me know.
I'm not using it as much as I thought.

Also, I've always gassed for the Moisturizer, so that'd be the one I'd go for!

PMed.

I must admit that i am beginning to lean towards the Moisturizer a bit more, at least for the more immediate purchase. Less knobs means I can find settings easier. I DO want the Filterbank but I may be trying to force a more studio oriented piece of gear onto my pedalboard...

Moisturizer is from Baltimore so buy that one.
More useful for what you're doing right now.
The 2 from what I hear is unpredictable and even sweeps are hard to perform that's a lotta scratch for a naztay

I have NEVER played either I've just seen a moisturizer being built in his shop at True Vine freshness...

The Moisturizer checks off the bare minimums on the filter (multimode, LFO) plus it adds that spring reverb and sounds Sweet from what I have heard.

The Filterbank has AM, FM, 2 VCFs, 2 VCAs, LFO, Env Generator, tons of CV and Midi control...

But I also know that I am notorious for going overboard too.

If I knew I could get a good sweep on the Filterbank using the MP-201 (were the other people that report not buying able to make it sweep using anything to manually make it sweep?...), I would be all over it. I also know that the Manual for the FilterBank sucks and all of the controls are very interactive, so maybe they could be missing the filter sweep because of another knob...IDK

I have a few more days to ponder this over.

Yeah dude! It sounds great. And it's as much its own instrument with the springs exposed as well. That's how he uses it a lot, slapping and smacking the springs (TWSS)

I love my moisturizer - as a filter, reverb or instrument. i ordered it from knas with all the mods and highly recommend it that way. being able switch order of reverb/filter basically gives you two different tonal footprints. dialing the feedback amount - how could you not want that? leading up to my knas purchase i was also considering the filterbank - at the time what i really wanted was a nasty filter with tons of cv options - but the more i researched the two, the moisturizer's versatility and downright coolness factor sold me. i play the springs all the time.

if yer looking at nasty sounds - check out the metasonix line - i picked up an F-1 and freakin love it. moisturizer + f-1 + mp201 = journey into the harsh realm
