Voltage starving: Which pedals do what.

Post by TheOndrakGuy »

I'm thinking about wiring up a voltage starve knob in a Meathead clone of mine, just for kicks (and maybe to see whether it'll act as a gain/texture control), however it'd be good to know how that circuit reacts so I know whether it'll be a useful endeavour or not.
I'm kinda borrowing the idea for this thread from Lawrence's thread in the Ohnoho forum about which pedals do what his Chk Chk Boom feedback loopers.

So yeah, anyone who's had experience starving pedals, impart your wisdom here!

Before you go modding your pedal, maybe think about making a dying battery simulator. See beavisaudio.com, under «Dying Battery Simulator», or «Devolt». You can make yourself a stand-alone unit, and have it handy for testing different pedals. If you like the results, then you can do the mod. If you don`t, no harm done, stick it back in the toolbox.

Jero made me one and I CAN STARVE ANYTHING!!! Some pedals are cool some just cut out, it's kind of hit or miss even with the same TYPE of pedal from DIFFERENT makers a la phaser or flange... I found that usually the cheaper the pedal the better it works, kinda like a Chk Chk...

It's a homebrew pedal and I've already got a 'spare knob' on there which I intended to use as a voltage starve but never hooked up, so it's no big deal. I'm using the schem from the Beavis Audio page about hooking up internal starve knobs to pedals rather than an external unit, so it's all good.

Devi stuff generally likes starve - the Test Pattern starved is a thing of ugly beauty.

Fender Blender (RI) gets gritty but the range between starved and doing nothing and just cutting out is razor thin.

I generally don't deal with the hassle though, I have enough stuff on my board to do obscene stuff as it stands.

My good modulation and delay stuff is all intended for real AC, and don't want to cook my babies with a Variac.

My pedalboard costs approximately 191 Metal Zones.
