Post by ryan summit »

http://stevegiard.com/pentatonicposter-02242013-sg1.pdf
props to the dude who made it
i realize its kinda late in my life
to memorize and learn all this shit
but i find myself making up my own exercizes and scales
to practice and get my fingers loose
this is what ive been lookin for
specifically the shapes part
i dont have to worry about keys and root notes right now
i just want to know some patterns to work off of
cant embed this from my ipad cause its pdf
but ill work on it
figured if anyone else is where im at
this will help
also if you guys have any input
on what are helpful areas to work on
id appreciate it

Dude that is an awesome resource. Thanks for sharing that. I should print it out and post it on my wall - good work team!

Personally I'm against learning scale shapes/patterns, for fear of it translating into my playing and condemning me to the blues pentatonic for eternity
If I need to warm up I generally just improvise atonally and get gradually faster, paying really close attention to not getting any dead notes, so maybe try that!
I used to do the whole practice discipline thing a lot, it definitely improved my dexterity but kinda made me hate the guitar for a while

i somewhat fear the same thing
but theres only so many combinations
i can come up with
to play any better
because what i know is so limited
and my hands physically cant move that way yet
any song ivevtried to learn
i end up playin somethin else
so i figure this will be the same
give me notes a and b
and ill find my way to c eventually
hopefully it sounds cool gettin there
believe me im open to any tips
i spend alot of time thinking about where to start
i think i learned 3 different techniques
tryin to learn the mc5 ramblin rose riff
but yeah backwardsv
i will make sure to keep doin that
at least i know im doin somethin right

If nothing else, it's kinda beautiful. So many dots & lines...

Learning more means you're not condemned to playing the same wanky stuff over and over again.

I believe if you know what is "right" to play than you can know what is "wrong" to play and you can get all weird, unique and interesting. You gotta start somewhere and it is never too late to start learning something new. I have been practicing scales and trying to visualize the guitar in certain keys and once I know what notes "should" be played, I can get creative and play notes that "shouldn't" be played. Whenever I practice this way, I never want to put down the guitar!

Also, dots and lines!

not if you approach the learning with an I don't give a fuck attitude

oh that bit is cool, I'll try that out. fuck the rest of yo rules though imma do what I want

look it over but don't actually try to memorize it and learn anything

learning is for chumps

I never said you have to learn anything if you don't want to. Mediocrity is always an option, I know (sigh, my playing).

"Learning" is not necessarily synonymous with copying or memorizing, by the way. If you can play guitar at all, you've learned something. You don't have to learn something from someone to learn it.

There, now you've learned another part of the definition of learn. Unless you read this with an I don't give a fuck attitude. In that case, you can fuck the rest of my rules and do what you want, because learning is for chumps.

personally I've gotten way too comfortable with patterns and shapes up and down the neck. Of course if I'm sitting down and I have time to myself I won't write something that sounds scalar but I probably spend too much time noodling through all the modes.

Scales are good to know though, just don't stop there.

When I was in high school my school's jazz band traveled to Savannah, GA to compete at Swing Central which is a HS jazz competition. They had a lot of big name players there who did some clinics there as well as worked with the bands. What stuck with me though is that they emphasized that the best and quickest way to become a sick player is to learn the shit out of songs that you love.

They said if you pick 10 songs (10 being the minimum, doing more will just help you grow more!) learn all the key parts, transcribes the solo(s), chords, be able to sing AND play the parts you will have enough snuff to be a well versed musician. You need to do this by EAR too. Reading the parts will help your music reading skills but learning by ear which is much different.

I thought it was a good point.

Dude, that's a really good point.
I can't really get all scale shapes out of my head but I tend to purposely add like raised 5ths and chromatic runs into scales and repeat them.

I use this website:

http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/guitar_scales.php

You can choose what key, tuning, and scale you want, and you can isolate the patterns at whatever fret you need. In this way, I learned the modes. Now when I learn new scales, I can learn them in the same way, so I can pick any scale in any key and then change it into another scale if I want. Picking some of the stranger scales (my favorite so far on here is Moorish Phrygian) will teach you to make new chord shapes, too.

I read something somewhere, a long time ago about jazz and improvisation and such. Whoever it was said something about learning all these intricate musical rules and then throwing them out the window. At least from time to time. I tend to find a riff in whatever scale I start with, and then if some note(s) that doesn't fit in the scale pops in, and it sounds cool, I keep it.
