Uh-oh. Need help with my Skinpimp Faceplant.

Post by Bieling2 »

I messed up my Skinpimp Faceplant (long time lurker first post BTW). I was getting ready to trade this thing to a member of this board and I didn't want to make a bad first impression by passing on problems... I figured out that one of the pots was shot. It'd sound fine if I put a little pressure on it while turning it up, but then would sound almost starved at other times in the same position with out that extra nudge. No biggy, just get a new pot, right? Ya, that was the easy part.

I switch the pot out no problem and now I can't remember which wire went on which side, and where the negative wire from the battery runs to.

Image

So we have a two wires; one "A" goes to the left side of the 1k pot, the second "B" to the right, and a third "C" is the negative wire from the battery that runs somewhere...I have no idea. Does the shorter wire on the bottom of the board go to "A" or "B," and the slightly longer wire towards the top of the bottom of the board??? If anyone could please help I'd greatly appreciate it.

FYI the Faceplant is a Fuzz Face clone, here's an alternate pic of a fully assembled pedal although it doesn't show the area under the board where I'm working (none of them I can find do):

If any more pics are needed from the actual pedal to help trouble shoot please let me know.

Okay, I've tried every combination I can imagine from the existing variables... I have very, very, low fuzz sound, and the battery is heating up, I take it something is wired wrong... hope I haven't fried something. Can the trannys be hurt because of that? Please, anyone, before I destroy a $200 pedal, can you help me figure out whats wrong?

Anyone have any idea where the negative wire from the battery goes on a fuzz face clone??? Really stump as none of the schematics I've seen specifically point this out.

The battery - wire should go to the junction of the 33K(Orange, Orange, Orange) and 470Ω(Yellow, Violet, Brown) resistors. I'm making the assumption that your pedal is PNP with + ground, like the first issue Fuzz Faces. As for the other two wires, one should be a ground that goes to the outer lug where the 2.2uF cap attaches, and the other should go to the 100K(Brown, Black, Yellow) and Q2 junction. The other side of that 100K will be connected to the 2.2uF input coupling cap.

No problem, but I must give credit to http://fuzzcentral.ssguitar.com/fuzzface.php Without those schematics, I'd be at a loss myself.

I just bought this very pedal and it is quite finicky. Bieling was patient with me though and he helped me figure out how to coddle it and make it sound great.
