any compressors you love for their tampering with sound?

Post by space6oy »

i've never been too into compressors aside from plugins and recording, am no showoff lead solo slayer or anything, but am surprised i kinda dig how the rogue vintage compressor pedal i picked up dirt cheap tampers w/ the sound coming out of it, & by that i don't mean the control of compression, mean how it kinda taints the sound, makes cleans a bit dirtier. wondering if there are any others out there people have found to love for similar reason - first i thought about looking for was a vintage ross to go with some of my other oldie pedals, but damn, $275 on ebay...

The comp on the fx500 is super awesome. Adds that old digital color and can take out all playing dynamics and] make you sustain forever.

i've only had two compressor pedals, the rogue and a boss CS-2. never noticed the boss altering the sound aside from volume control / sustain whatsoever. have a few other rackmount compressors, haven't really noticed them doing what the rogue does either.

back in the Triassic Era I used to use a MXR compressor (Dyna Comp) with the squish all the way off as a toggle-able volume boost. it had a nice effect that was difficult to define, but definitely added some fat with the volume and made things more lively.

one of these years i'm going to get a EH Black Finger and tube-roll NOS 12AX7s to optimize it...i believe they take two 12AX7s, and a GE (for tone) or RCA (for phatness) in V1 and a Telefunken (for clarity) in V2 would probably be ideal. i'm totally addicted to the early 70s Fairchild tube limiter sound that Steve Stills, and later David Lindley, used so effectively.

I love my Barber Tone Press since it has a mix knob that you can mix the compressed sound with the dry signal. You can get some mad sustain with it and not have to sacrifice any of your natural dynamics. Its been on my board for a couple of years and if I remember right they are pretty cheap to grab on eBay.

but does that taint the sound aside from the compression? that's really what i'm asking about... just awkward to describe.

Always been interested in that one. Might finally have to try one.

^yea philosophers tone gets pretty gnarlyyy. great pedal.

dyna comp too. dirty and gritty

recently, i've been loving the master compressor on my mpc1000.
it gets alot of hate on the internet, but ooooh the pumping when u dial it in just right.

also recently copped a yamaha gc2020, which is apparently the worst compressor ever made. lol
sounds good and lofi to me :)

i found that i liked the PT run on lower voltage than the Pigtronix adapter. at 9V it had less clean headroom, but fuck clean headroom anyway,

I have a byoc comp which I think is a clone of earlier dynacomps. I used to use it with comp and 0 and vol maxed and kept it on all the time. Then I started turning it off and everything was so much better, which is funny cause that's why I started keeping it on. Now I max the volume for a boost and keep the compression pretty high for some all out rawk.

ive always used it with an 18v
im gonna give the 9v a try
i dont usually use it for dirt though
always with fuzz or od
never thought it would be more nasty
with less voltage
but that makes sense
thanks for the nugget kitty

I have an old Boss Compressor CS-2 and I find that it does do some pretty interesting things depending on where you place it
and what you run through it. Mostly, I've used it on drum machines and it really adds a lot of grit. It really alters the sound
of the cymbals and snares on a few machines. I've been using an old TR505 (budget, mid-80's drum machine) and it sounds
great. The timbale sound almost like a bell or chime. I've been running a low-pass filter after the drum machine but before the
compressor and it sounds pretty rad.. Also running the compressor with a fuzz like a Supa-Tone gets some pretty nutty sounds.
Of course, this is all done with all 3 knobs on the compressor cranked all the way up.
Adds a lot of hiss too, which I like......

Made a baritone guitar sound kind of neat too!
