humbucker sized P90 for a strat-style pick guard?

Post by gunslinger_burrito »

I guess this goes here :idk:

I wanted to put a humbucker sized P90 in my strat-style guitar, so I ordered a GFS....and with the metal cover, it wouldn't fit in the pick guard. The hole wasn't routed big enough. Are there any humbucker sized P90s that would fit?! Or to the best of everyone's knowledge, do they all come in covered styles?

I'd measure the humbucker cutout on your pickguard, then have a pickup manufacturer give you the dimensions of their pickup. (Which GFS and everyone else should seriously should list on their site!)

I'd pretty much guarantee P-Rail would fit, and give you some extra tones to boot!

.

Here are some covered humbucker-sized 90s, but you could check the dimensions and ask whether the covers come off:

SD Phat Cat...covered, but the dimensions are on their site.

BG Pups Pure90s.

Harmonic Design Z90.

There are some other guys making covered hum-sized-90s...Gibson charges a ton, so forget em...Rio Grande is also too pricey...Kent Armstrong is pricey if you consider that GFS charges way less for their imorted pickups (and I once had a turd sounding KA pickup, though some people have had luck).

So the GFS was to big to fit the pickguard? Will it fit in the guitar?

If so, pickguards are really easy to cut/file to size especially if it just needs a little room.

If you got the Mean 90, it's worth it to make that thing fit.

They're great pickups! Lots of great sounds...I love p90s, but actually ended up loving the tone of the single-coil rails more!

I ended up selling it to a friend of mine..... It would have fit in the guitar, it was mainly that the corners of the metal cover were too large for the hole.

I like that you can get three tones out of them. I use high-output humbuckers right now, but in all the different styles I play my guitar (especially when I'm doing the super-layered, textured noise thing and need an odd tone in order to cut through the chaos) some of those other options sound nice. The guitar was originally a G&L Comanche but I didn't like being stuck with a strat-y tone so I had humbuckers put in a new pick guard. Any opinion or knowledge on the high-output version of the P rails?

I tried P-Rails in the LTD that came stock with them. I assume they weren't the high-output version (because they didn't say they were!), but one of my first thoughts was, damn, these are pretty hot! But the P-90 side could've been a tad hotter. I read on the SD forum that someone said they thought the hot ones were too hot, but you know how opinions differ.

How do you even go about ordering the custom high-output version?? Go to a dealer?

I found some through amazon, ebay, etc...just don't quite have the cash for them yet. Just googled "p rails hot."
