Nano Muff Replacement Suggestions

Post by imonthestereo »

Hey there,

My pedal board is currently this:

Guitar -> Nano Muff -> Woolly Mammoth Clone -> Secret Destroyer -> Memory Toy -> Tuner -> Amp

I basically use the little muff as an overdrive that's constantly on (it's apparently based on an early "fuzz" circuit, but is pretty mild) and engage the wool or destroyer for different, more intense varieties of fuzz.

Anyway, I'm ready to replace my nano muff, mainly because it has no gain control. It has a master volume, and you control the fuzz intensity with your instrument volume. I like the sound of the muff when I crank my guitar volume to max, but I'd rather be able to dial it in on the actual pedal, which would give me more flexibility on volume control via my guitar.

Any suggestions for a similar overdrive sound that has both a master volume and gain? The overdrive on my amp is too squishy and muddy or something; just doesn't do it for me.

This is what it sounds like:

check out the basic audio scarab. very clear, yet fuzzy drive. also, the algal bloom excels at this too.

Algal Bloom is great! I used to have a double muff (2 of the same circuit as a nano muff) and the algal bloom can do similar sounds but is much, much more versatile. The Mini Fuck OD by ss/bs also does really nice fuzzy drive and also cleaner more 'standard' overdrive sounds.

I used to own a nano muff and the first pedal that comes to mind to replace it would be the Devi Ever Dark Boost. Very similar character as the nano muff and has volume and gain knobs.

If you like the nano muff's sound, why not just a big muff or something fancier like the tone wicker or the pharaoh?

I was going to suggest the Devi Electric Brown, and I see someone already did that.

Speaker Cranker is also a good rec.

I would suggest fuck od for the versatile dirt toanz or a pharaoh for wooly muffiness that stacks particularly well with other dirt pedalz.

Would the Mid-Fi Demo Tape Fuzz be capable of similar tones?
