Fender BF Pro Reverb Head

Post by Psyre »

Shop by my grandparents have a bf pro reverb head, obviously it's been modded from combo to head, but I'm curious if at $699 assuming I can take cash and talk him down at least $50, would it be worth it? I mean its still a bf pro reverb. Also had an approx '76 pro for $799. G-pa says I could get it off him for $700 if I took in cash, but how can you tell if it's a '76 or if its a '77 or later with the SS rectifier? Also out of those 2 would you prefer if the SF combo was an actual '76?

Or should I just save up for the $1,000 '68 drip edge super reverb near my parents?

If you like the head, go for it, but I'd say it's worth no more than $500 since it is, at its core, a hack job, and your future resale will be gutted because of it.

As far as the Supers, well, play them and see which one sounds better.

And don't assume you'll like tube or SS rectifier better, play the amp, not the specs.

Just be aware that the Super is going to be well, super heavy to lug around.

Yea, the guy let us crank it up, i turned it up to about 6 and my friend jammed some smith's tunes, so I could really hear it open up ( I played on it too of course) and I just love how tight everything was.

I think Supers're great for rhythm playing. (Of course, they're great for lead too.)

I was able to nab the super for $900, it's cosmetically flawless, so excited. It will be a super long 3 weeks until I will be back home to play it though.

Time to get a set of backup tubes and fuses.

Be sure to check the fuse that's in it to make sure it's correct.

So many of them have had it changed with whatever crammed in and physically half-worked that it's the first thing to check on one!

Once you've done all that, it can't hurt to have your tech take a gander at it.

Yea, thats why I offered $900. I have to get the 2-prong changed to the 3-prong like I did on my bassman. Still have my RCA tubes I pulled out of my bassman, so I will keep those for backups. Plan to have my parents run it to a tech so it's ready to go when I get back and get to play it on Christmas (since my parents combined my christmas and birthday to cover half of it). The guy had it on consignment from the original owner, never got played too much from what he said, original cover and all.
