BYOC Divided Octave

Post by vrom »

Yo ho!

So I'm in the process of adjusting my Divided Octave, as the octave volume is too low. There are threads on the BYOC forum for this, but hell, it's the interwebs, let's put this info everywhere! Do check the BYOC forum for some great first hand advice.

Here is something Jeff Moote over at TB shared with me, since his build is about as awesome a version w/mods as I've seen of this effect:

______________________________________

The approach I took was to pick what I thought would be good ranges for each mod/component based on reading what other people did on the BYOC forum and such, and chose a pot value based on that. I then tuned them by ear which I think is a good way to approach this rather than just swapping resistor values. I suppose you could socket those resistors and swap them pretty easily but a trimpot is easier still and if you like you could add external access to it via a hole in the enclosure. There’s no room for the trimpot on the board so I have them on the end of wires inside the enclosure but it could easily be glued to the side of the box with a hole for access with a mini screwdriver.

I believe the trimpot values I used were 250k for R8 and 5k for R9 but I currently have them set back to stock. Increasing R8 and decreasing R9 both increase the lower octave level, but in different ways with respect to the dry signal and use of the bass only switch. They also interact so you have to play with some different values to find what you like.

I got it tuned so the bass only was at unity with the bypassed signal, but then the output was too high for my liking when using it with the GR upper octave and 100% wet on the mix knob.

Hopefully you can play with it and come up with something you like!

I'll add more info when I get it, and update here (and at BYOC, most likely) when I get around to modding this monster.

Cheers!

Do report back what you find and what values you settle on. I really like that circuit and it has tons of potential for mods depending on your taste.
