Been toying with the idea for about a year.

Post by Andrew »

I've been wanting to sell my Engl Screamer 50 and run a clean amp with pedals rather than be relying on amp gain where I get into the habit of too much chuggah and just get bored - I want to branch out more. I've been toying with the idea since early '2011 but wanted to wait until I got my amp retubed and the reverb tank replaced which I have done a month ago.

A few weeks back when I bought my Musket Fuzz and Memory Toy, I was running through a Deluxe Reverb instore and it was probably the best sound I've had heard and played with. My Engl takes pedals well but not brilliantly. So after convincing myself, I really want to do it now.

I'm not a twangy clean/blues guy, I just enjoy playing stuff like Anathema, Mogwai, City Of Ships and Made Out of Babies. Tuning to Standard Eb/E and CGCGAD. I wouldn't mind keeping my Orange PPC212 and running the amp through it for some extra bottom. Or running it stereo with my BH Little Giant.

So help me find a clean amp about $1500 au. Thinking of a Fender Princeton 'Verb, Fender Deluxe 'Verb 22w, anything else. Used or New, though had problems with my amp that I bought used and the Seller never mentioned the problems to me.

I'm not playing live at the moment.

Don't need anything too radical. Also, Australia. We don't get nice things.

Yeah, but you get weird things. I'm sure you have some funky Fender knock offs from like 1960s Indonesia.

Roland JC-120 or variant. Can't go wrong. But I also agree with futuresailors on this one.

I have a '68 Bassman, and if you could find a older/knock off of it I think you would be really happy. no onboard reverb, but great headroom with smooth breakup. However it is LOUD.

My two main CLEAN amps which are used as my platform for pedals are a vintage Showman and Blackstar Artisan 100.
They have tons of headroom for a brilliant, awesome clean tone and won't turn to muddy shit when used with any type of OD, fuzz, distortion.

The Fender can do medium volume to loud. The Blackstar does NOT do bedroom volume. It goes from loud to armageddon.
