Why not more bass reflex cabs?

Post by mathias »

So I was reading up on cabinets and noticed a lot of bass cabs use a bass reflex port, but not many guitar cabs do.

Also seems related: most small guitar amp combos and cabs are open-back, but larger (4x12, etc) cabs are closed back.

Thoughts? Reasons? Looking to learn here.

Thanks! :joy:

I have a TL-806 with an EV. It's the bomb. Sounds about as big as a 412 in a smaller cab, though it's still not particularly light.

guitar cabs are what they are because they were designed in ye olde tymes and guitarists fear change.
I used to love the sealed 4x12 cab for its massive thumping bass, but now I find them too directional (like lazorz) and am digging open back because they fill the area with sound rather than blasting it like a water cannon

well, most combo amps are open-back because you have to get at the tubes. i expect that the reason for the lack of bass reflex guitar cabinets is that they'd make guitars too boomy or (more likely) too muddy. i prefer 2x12" closed cabinets, which give me a more focused sound. i've liked the 4x12s i've tried, but haven't been able to afford a good one and they're kind of impractical for the volume levels i get to use.

i love my older mesa thiele ported 1x12. it's funny, i never was able to get the back off to check out what the speaker is. you would've had to essentially pry it off and i knew i would fuck it up. however, just by the cab's weight, i assume the speaker is an evm. guess it could be something else, but it certainly sounds like one. so lovely

If the power handling stated on the cab is 200 watts, it ought to be an EVM since nothing else they used in those comes close.
