guitar mod

Post by sylnau »

I have an old PRS CE-22 which I like (doesn't have those silly birds on the fretboards)... best neck ever, sound great unplugged.
Here my pickup configuratiuon at the moment:
(I have the 5 way rotary switch)

■Position 10: Treble pickup
■Position 9: Outside coils- deep and clear - parallel
■Position 8: Series single coils – Warm version of the "in between the treble and middle pickups"
■Position 7: Parallel single coils – Crisp version of the "in between the treble and middle pickups"
■Position 6: Bass pickup

Would I have more option or better sound out of my pickup by replacing the 5 way rotary switch for a 3 way toggle and a push/pull tone pot in this configuration?

PUSH-PULL DOWN POSITIONS
■Position 1: Treble Humbucker
■Position 2: Both Humbuckers
■Position 3: Bass Humbucker

PUSH-PULL UP POSITIONS
■Position 4: Bridge Single Coil
■Position 5: Both Single Coils
■Position 6: Neck Single Coil

I never really experiment with pickups... so I don't really know much.

I also might change the Dragon II pickup for Bare Knuckle Abraxas or for some Lollar Imperial.

Syl, what sounds do you need out of your pickups?

Some people don't like the taper on push-pull pots. If you do a lot of manipulating of your tone knob and you like the taper on the pot you've got in there, don't change it. I generally don't like the single coil sound of split coil humbuckers compared to their humbucking sound. So, I'd avoid any split coil wirings. Which pickup configurations would you use the most? Or do you just wanna go all out? Don't get stuff wired up that you aren't gonna use. Go with as little wiring as you can get away with. I also like pickups wired out of phase. That's a nice sound.

I agree with you on the push/pull.

I would like those two to be louder:
■Position 9: Outside coils- deep and clear - parallel
■Position 7: Parallel single coils – Crisp version of the "in between the treble and middle pickups"

Full humbucker is what I use most of the time, but I'd like the split to be a bit louder and tele like.

I've heard high output pickup like the Bare Knuckle Abraxas fix this issue.

When split, single coils of humbuckers are always not as loud as when humbucking.

Maybe there's a mod you can do to make it a little louder though? :idk: I just don't know what that mod may be.

Hopefully someone who knows more about guitar electronics will inform us. :D
