Corroded frets on an old acoustic

Post by the_carl »

So my dad has an ancient Epiphone acoustic (well, like, 70's-80's, but he hasn't used it in ~25 years) that he's kept in the basement, and it's developed some green corrosion-y looking stuff on the frets. I was hoping it would come off with a damp cloth or something, but it's a bit more serious than that. Is there special cleaning stuff I should be using? Fine steel wool? Probably not worth doing a re-fret, so I'm willing to try whatever.

I've used 0000 steel wool in the past to get rid of super funky frets, just tape over the pickups before use because the steel-dust goes everywhere.

So I finally got around to purchasing steel wool, and that stuff is miraculous. I didn't think it would work when I opened the pack and felt how non-sharp it was, but man are my frets shiny now.

Also, holy crap I actually updated a project thread. I never do that.
