sperzel/grover/neither
gotta change my pegs soon
having all the problems associated with cheap ones
same 2 never stay in tune wether im playin or not
almost all of them do nothing for quarter-half twist
i use heavy strings and beat the hell out of them when playin
i tune d stan and drop to A occasionally
just want decent ones that work well for my setup
would you guys go sperzel, grover, somethin else,or not worry about trivial shit like tuners
and if you change tunings frequently locking is not an option, correct?
i know that might be a dumb question but i never had'em, so dont really know to what extent they lock

Re: sperzel/grover/neither
I've got Gotoh Vintage style tuners in my Baritone Jazzmaster that is now tuned to Bass VI Drop D, so an octave lower than standard drop D and they hold like a champ. They aren't locking tuners, but I've not found a problem with them.
My Kramer aluminum neck bass has Schallers which are also excellent.

i had sperzel's on a epi SG 400 custom, and they hold tuning pretty well. the only thing is that the string hole for the low E could barely pass a size 52 slinky top heavy bottom string, and you can only get 1 or a little more turns on their short posts.
thats something you may have to consider.

Any of the "big names" should be fine.
Check what size peg holes your guitar has first, that may influence your decision.

Re: sperzel/grover/neither
ah the greasy nut
in know now binding might be an issue with heavier strings
but when had regs on there the 2nd strings peg was farked
so hopefully ima have a bone nut on there next month and setup for heavy string d stan
but want new pegs put on since its gonna be strpped in hands of a pro anyway
but greasin the nut
what greasy substance should i use till than
and should i file(?) the nut or what
school me if you got a minute ive always used whtever strings were cheap until last month
(d'agostino extra lights 2 pk for 2.99)
good info though
i dont think im gonna go locking

Re: sperzel/grover/neither
I'd go Sperzel Trim-Lock. Those things are rock solid and have surprised me how well they hold pitch. I put a set on this weekend and then did three gigs with the bass. The tuner after gig #3 was still as rock solid as it was before gig #1.

Yeah, the tuner itself doesn't lock. It has a nut on the back that clamps the string in the hole and keeps it form slipping.
As far as tuning goes they work exactly the same as regular tuners.
The main reason I would use locking tuners is that you can change your strings in about 5 minutes.

That, and since you're removing all of the wraps around the tuning peg, the time for the string to stretch is significantly less. So you can change strings faster and stretch them faster too.

Why or why not should i get locking tuners?
I hate stringing guitars! Is there any brand that wont fit a 056 low E (D) string in the hole?

I don't know want brands won't but I know that Sperzel will. I've tried them up to a 74 and that was about the limit.
I wouldn't think a 56 would be too big for any of them.
