the possibility of putting all your pedals into 1 enclosure, sort of like a multi effect. make it patchable a-la-modular.
the MFB kraftzwerg is a good parallel example. no patching and it's a set signal path. plug cables in & you can route things however you want.

i have a UE400 w/ footswitch. the instapatch selector is neat, especially for its age, but routing the path yourself is way nicer. plus that way you can send/return to patch other things into that rig.
