The Elements Supreme Distorto Pennyroyal Shallaunge!!!
Well but really the only thing it is is this:
WHO CAN GET THE BEST "IN UTERO" DISTORTION OUT OF THE THE ELEMENTS?
I'm specifically talking the simple growl of "Pennyroyal Tea" and "All Apologies". Those were mixed my Scott Litt (I'm pretty sure) and have a subtly different sound to them.
I have a few settings myself, but before I detailed those I wanted to get an "unbiased" as it were opinion from a few different ear pairs.
WHATCHOO GOT?

Hmm, I'll have to mess around with getting that sound this weekend. After a refresher to those songs, it seems like a lot of mids and probably finding the right setting on the mid freq knob. It also gets really saggy at times, and I'm not sure how you'd get the elements to make that sound. I think you would a cooking amp with tubes that were already close to their limit...

I'll try this before the weekends.
But I think Ryan's Woofer Wailer Square setting could sound close.

That is similar (in my setup).

Totally need a lot of mids for those tones hey... grindy mids, lots of gain, probably the middle clipping position... I think a cooking amp is a big part of that particular sound...
You guys know if those songs were recorded with single coils or humbuckers? That weird Jaguar or whatever he had with the humbuckers?

Most video I've found (live).
Kurt was using a Mustang.

But I don't know what he was using in the studio.
Sound like humbucker to me.

Re: The Elements Supreme Distorto Pennyroyal Shallaunge!!!
As far as I've read, he used his Jaguar with the humbuckers and maybe some Mustang for "In Utero", with the Boss Turbo Distortion and a Fender Twin Reverb. But there are soooooo many different articles on what he used, it's way too convoluted to put it all together succinctly.
EDIT (from www.kurtsequipment.com):
"In Utero" was recorded at Pachyderm Studios in Minnesota with producer Steve Albini (25). As for guitars, Kurt used his Fender Jaguar (57) and possibly the Ibanez Les Paul mentioned in the "Guitars, Miscellaneous" section. The Stella acoustic, after it was fixed-up with new tuners and strings, was used for the acoustics on the album (41)(57).
Kurt's Fender Twin Reverb was the main amp used (57).
As for effects, the Boss DS-2, Small Clone chorus (on what I don't know-- possibly the solo to "Verse Chorus Verse"?), Earnie's Polychorus (57), his own EchoFlanger, (41) and supposedly a Tech 21 Classic SansAmp amp-simulator effects box (32) were used. No rotovibe was used despite what it says in the tablature book ("In Utero" sheet music book 26)(41).
My IC Big Muff actually gets pretty close... I'm going to try to run that through the Cleanness part of my Elements.

You know, I think a Frazz with a mids knob would do that guitar tone better than the Elements... it needs a certain kind of grind that I think the Frazz does better.

The Frazz would need more treble too.
There is a lot of mid, but lots of treble too.
His sound is probably more from the amp than the pedal.
He was usualy using a boss distortion.
I'm getting close with the Elements...
EDIT... second though, Ryan I think your right... Frazz on the not gated mode... and lots of mid from the amp.

Re: The Elements Supreme Distorto Pennyroyal Shallaunge!!!
I'm moderately interested in grabbing a Fender Twin Reverb from a dude on Craigslist... I wonder if Cobain added some dirt to his with his DS-2... My is guess is no, as the Fender Twin is going to be veeeeery clean on the clean channel at any volume, and I don't think there is any documentation for him using any other sort of dirt or an overdriven amp.
Sadly, both my guitar and amp are being fixed up right now, so I have no way to accept my own SHALLAUNGE!

I'd love a Fender Twin too... if I catch a sweet deal on one sometime I'd definitely go for it.
I was thinking, to get this Nirvana tone out of the Elements I'd put the bass toggle up, the mids toggle up, and then turn the mids knob all the way down. I think that with a lot of gain and the open clipping position.. maybe lower... would be closest to those tones.
