Early 90's indie rock coming back?

Post by mrmtzion »

I have noticed that allot of people in my town are starting back to basics (guitar,guitar/vocals,bass,drums,no effects pedals) 90's indie rock style bands. Is this sound coming back or is it just a Charleston thing? I know of 4 bands here that kinda have that superchunk, garden variety kind of sound. I like it and hope that it gains momentum.

Let's hope not.

Seems like oftentimes people pick up on the "bad" aspects of any certain decade to revive.

It might be coming back as most of us are too fucking poor for effects. I always start trying to do some big effects heavy project, but we give up and jam over 90s alternative indie shit, when we realize we don't know how to do that shit, and can't afford more equipment.

Well, that is true to an extent, but there's a shitton of stuff nationwide now all along the same lines of "90's midwest emo". They all play shows together and roughly belong to a huge community of friends. I listed a few bands that I've played with a bunch of times below.

I like the "idea" of it coming back but lets hope for a evolution and not a throwback.. sadly the way it works out most of the time is throwback.. like what is popular in the mainstream now :barf: is like a bad 80's train reck :barf: or the pop punk in the 90's :barf: or swing in the 90's :barf: or the ska pop thing :barf: ect ct

So far, it seems like the bands who are coming back for more than a single reunion tour get that. Mission of Burma sounds more furiously skronky than ever. Dinosaur Jr... well, they sound like themselves. But that's always been their point. I think the issue would be new bands trying to ape the sounds of "the old days."

Still, that said, I've never been too concerned about what's on the radio, so I probably will miss most of the wannabes who would make me cringe.
