I love Food Network.
Follow Guy's trail of Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives the whole way down. The West Coast is the best coast for noms.

Isn't there some way to put little markers on a google maps or something and save it? It would be kinda neat to see this little trail of dots of the places you stopped.

Re: west coast vacation!
Things to do in San Francisco:
- Get tiki drinks at the Tonga, where it's always prom.
- Tuesday burger at Rosamunde on Haight and Fillmore. Warning: there is a 45 minute wait and you're probably sunk if you aren't there by noon. You can just go next door to Toronado and grab a beer. They'll even let you eat there. (Rosamunde's sausages are plenty awesome if you can't make lunch on Tuesday)
- The Tee Off Bar & Grill is sorta off the beaten path for the city, but the combination of dive bar and awesome kitchen cannot be beat.
- Get comics and check out the Toilet Seat Museum at Isotope. James (the proprietor) will have plenty of recommendations for cool shit to do as well.
- If you want something other than holes in the wall and dives, get some small plates at Sauce. I can't say enough good things about the Portobello Mushroom Fries or the mini bacon-wrapped meatloaf! Heaven's Dog is also a good small plates sorta place (upscale Chinese food) with a killer cocktail menu.

Re: west coast vacation!
nice tips! all those spots sound rad...
updates:
-had some awesome pizza at ken's, then good times at beulahland in portland.
-rolled to crater lake and camped the night. saw one of the most epic sunsets then managed to set up my tent for the first time i used it in full darkness without any problems! temp went down to 35 overnight and we were not totally well equipped... woke up at 5:30am nonethless to catch the sunrise over the lake and it was just as epic as the sunset.
-hiked around a little bit then drove to umpqua hot springs for a publicly nude dip in the 108degree pools. YES
-just grabbed and juice and am driving down to crescent city, CA - will likely hit a guy fieri-approved joint then drive another hour for beach camping at the start of the redwood natnl park.
also, brought some pedals by PGS and oldtown music in portland so we'll see what happens! both places were sweet and everyone was awesomely friendly. wish i got to check out controlvoltage... next time!

Re: west coast vacation!
I keep meaning to check out Portland, that sounds awesome! Normally I'd be down to catch a beer in SF, but work has me flitting around the country this week. Enjoy the rest of your vacation!
(As far as gear stores, I guess there's The Starving Musician in Berkeley? I haven't really found any music gear stores I'm wild about in the Bay Area. For buying discs and or vinyl, hit up Amoeba Records or Aquarius Records for sure.)
